CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

“Sapphire?” Elijah says with a laugh, and I blink up at him. It’s been nearly two weeks since the most amazing date of my life with Isaiah, and I keep drifting off in thought as I remember it. “Not that I’m complaining, but you’ve been licking that sucker like it’s a cock, and I can’t think straight.”

My eyes go wide, and I immediately yank it out of my mouth. “Sorry…” I’m blushing. Bright red. I run for it into the back room and desperately search for anything to do, so I can hide from Eli.

“Everything for tomorrow is already set up. I’ll get here before sunrise, so I can start setting up. Hey,” Eli grabs my arm and turns me, so I’ll stop digging through boxes uselessly. “Sapphire,” he chuckles, shaking his head. “Did I make you uncomfortable?”

“No!” I shake my head, frowning. “Just a bit embarrassed.” I smile shyly. “I was uh. Thinking about my date with Isaiah,” I confess, and he smirks.

“Ah, that explains a lot.” He winks, and I cringe.

“Yeah.” Before he can say anything else, I change subjects. “I’ll be staying late, so I can do some finishing touches. Then I’ll get in at around six to start setting up with the twins and the bakery. They’ll each have a booth on either side of the door, and one barista will be inside by the register handing out samples.”

“I have something for you.” Elijah turns to his desk, opens a drawer, and then hands me a long velvet box. My jaw goes slack. “Open it,” he encourages.

With shaking fingers, I lift the lid, revealing a slim silver charm bracelet. There’s a blue sapphire stone, a small silver book charm, and a silver kitten charm.

“I wanted to thank you. I don’t think I would have been able to do this without you. Which is why I want to offer you a raise. Manager and twice your current pay. Paid time off for four weeks a year, although preferably not consecutively,” he chuckles, meanwhile, my jaw is still dangling in the wind. “And if you accept, I’ll also be handing you the keys to the company car.”

“Company car? This is a bookstore…why–”

“You don’t have one, and you might need it for things like picking books up from the post or purchasing other things we need.” He frowns, clearly unprepared for me to question the car.

“I don't have a license.” Okay, that's a lie. But so far he's been paying me in cash. “My life is complicated. I’ll be honest… I’m hiding from my ex. He has money and resources, and I’d really rather not be found.” Elijah’s easy smile falls.

“Why are you hiding? You’re scared of him?” His concern is bordering on anger. I shiver.

“It’s complicated,” I whisper, and Elijah takes a deep breath.

“He hurt you.” It’s not a question. I swallow hard.

“I need you to continue to pay me in cash if you can. I know it’s not exactly…legal…but I don't want to work anywhere else. I love it here.
